HO Shelf Layout
Переглядів 6649 місяців тому
This is an update showing the new working gate and other animations which add to switching operations. Taking the time to stop, wait for the conductor or brakeman to "do their work" means there is no rush and the pleasure of enjoying miniature real life scenarios of railroading - and fun too ! Enjoy ...
ANIMATED FLAGMAN AT CROSSING
Переглядів 612Рік тому
A new Flagman animated works the road crossing to stop traffic whilst the loco in the yard switches cars. Having "other" movements on my 6 foot switching shelf module adds to the enjoyment of operating and having some prototype items like the factory Blue Light and Derail means stopping before progressing. Hope you enjoy my little yard ....
Blue & Yellow Safety Target Adds to Op's

Yellow Flag Target Adds to Op's Part 1
Переглядів 334Рік тому
To add more realism for operations this video shows how I made a Yellow Flag Target that works and sits between the rails. Some spur tracks where people are working need protection hence this Yellow Flag Target. Yet to add a geared motor and timer plus a switch to activate the movement.

    BEST WAY FIX OLD ATH LOCO PICKUP OTHER MODEL CAN DO THAT SAME WAY THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE VIDEO

  • @petert9749
    @petert9749 4 місяці тому

    Thanks Laurie, and thanks to Josh. Thinking back to my days of trying to make Athearn Co-Co chassis work for use under Australian Clyde/GM locos, the worst problem was the relying on the truck/bogie swivel to get current from the bogie to the chassis. Lack of soldering point on the bogie was the problem, the usual fix being to solder a wire laid gently along the edge of the steel swivel plate on the bogie. Your brass solution is better. The cat's whiskers are probably not needed, and positioned on the tread of the wheels will tend to lose out to the tread dirt they constantly accumulate. I think what you are actually doing is trying to make up for the appalling pickup performance of the sintered wheels. The simple fix is to replace with Nickel Silver. That brings us on to the implied lack of confidence in the axle to bearing (or half axle to bearing) current transfer. Correctly built, and Athearn pretty much is, this split axle pickup is hard to beat, as there is no added friction or added wear. If you follow Model Railway Journal (Wild Swan, now Signet, I think) you might remember a letter by probably an engineer stating that the only real concern with bearing pickup is electrically induced pitting, which at our currents can be safely ignored. For professional standard treatment of split axle pickup verses wipers see Model Railways Illustrated (MORIL) articles and letters by Iain Rice (now sadly deceased), and Stuart Hine (I trust still going). High time I shut-up, so just two finishing points. 1/ I'm yet to be convinced the loose rivet matters. The whole structure relies on tolerance to move, something they do so much better than the really old 1960s Athearn, good though it was. 2/ Anyone new to Athearn Blue Box should realise that protracted running can overheat the motors; the faster, the longer, and the heavier the load, the quicker the heating. In other words, these models (as with all models) have a duty cycle. Any model train should be monitored for heat buildup - if nothing else, just use your fingers and nose. You will notice that slow speed on a cold model is superb, but when a model is warm the 'demented mouse theory' starting performance evaporates in favor of surging to a start. Watch with kids; Mum calls for lunch and the kid leaves the train full speed for Sydney. I don't know why anybody would want to go to Sydney. Dave Ramirez' Warbonnet Trains UA-cam has an instructive video on servicing and running models. He begins servicing an N scale steamer, but the really useful bit is just after that and concerns brushes, brush springs, and loading motors. Only my overblown opinion, so probably all wrong, and Redgreen; don't be afraid to join a club and ask questions. Anyhow, all the best to you all.

    One thing about these Athearn "Blue Box" locomotives being converted to DCC, you will Need to replace those sintered steel alloy wheelsets with nickel silver wheelsets. (Athearn sells a complete one piece drop in replacement wheelset in packages of 6, with bronze thrust washers and the gears.) Those sintered steel alloy wheels that those Blue Box models came with, have the tendency to ark and this can scramble a DCC decoder. This problem is even worse if you happen to use the older HO track with sintered steel allow rails. It appears that you've replaced the original motor with a Mashima can motor and redid the way the loco receives power from the rails. Another thing you'd might want to consider, (obviously the chassis of the loco provides part of the electrical pathway on these older Athearn Blue Box locos) instead of using metal couplers, I'd use EZ Mate plastic ones from Bachmann. If you have two Athearn Blue Box locos with metal couplers, this could short out the DCC system or booster, unless you've used the Kadee #232 coupler box and use a #2-56 screw to hold every thing in place. I live in the US and have worked on projects like this for years and I've added cab interiors to many of these available through Cannon & Co. I would also encourage you to look on Walthers Model Railroad product manufacturers list and search for parts there. God bless.

      G'Day Josh, I want to thank you for your information and the history of Athearn Blue Box. Also about the wheels that I was unaware of. I have only recently delved into repairing friends HO diesel locos - I have been a Colorado Narrow Gauge modeler for 40 years being HOn3 and On3. Warm regards and thanks, Laurie

    • @joshbenton4080

      My pleasure, this is just what we model railroaders do. And as I mentioned before with the older Athearn Blue Box models, they were all given the sintered steel allow wheel sets. Athearn discontinued their Blue Box line around 2009, when Athearn was taken over by Horizon. Since that time, Athearn has been in the business of selling RTR models and their locos since that time have nickel silver wheelsets. Northwest Short Line sells "half axle" wheelsets made of nickel silver, along with gears made of Delrin plastic, to replace any cracked gearsets. I'd encourage you to purchase an NMRA gauge, just to check and make sure your wheel sets are properly gauged, if you decide to do this. My HO train layout had code 100 track in the past, with some trackage having rails made out of sintered steel allowed rails. I've since replaced this with code 83 and code 70 track, with rails made out of nickel silver. The HO code 100 track represents trackage with 152 Pound rail. (In the US and Canada and probably Mexico, the rail size is determined by how much the rail weighs per pound per yard. Else where in the world, the rail size is determined by how much the rail weighs per kilogram per meter.) In the US, there was only one railroad that used 152 Pound rail and that was the Pennsylvania Railroad. (PRR) Code 83 track in HO, represents trackage with 132 Pound rail and this is considered "mainline" rail. Code 70 track in HO, represents trackage with 100 Pound rail, which used to be used in the US in the early 20th Century as mainline rail. However, trackage with 100 Pound rail is typically used on sidings and branch lines today. There's also some mass transit outfits here in the states that uses 100 Pound rail for their lines and even "Light Rail" systems. (Trams) I personally like the look of jointed rail track with 100 pound rail and code 70 track replicates this rather nicely. God bless. @@scoopmmr

    • @scoopmmr
      @scoopmmr 5 місяців тому

      Inside the boxcar is a TCS FL decoder programmed to the loco number. Both loco and boxcar have F1 to work the brakeman's arm to move. His arm has a tiny wire allowing it to rotate 30 degrees and connected to a crank wheel on gear reduction motor which works of the F1 light function.

  • @dans_stuff
    @dans_stuff 5 місяців тому

    Nice bit of movable fun to add, Laurie. Saves having pin holes scattered over the layout if have a bunch of common spots for figures to “be working” (with steel shim under terrain). Could you perhaps try a small shim of styrene under the figures other foot to level out the underside of their shoes? Not sure if that would make it any easier to stand?

    • @scoopmmr
      @scoopmmr 5 місяців тому

      G'Day Dan, I use a Dremel to cut away the heel area and make it level with the other boot. The Nano magnet is a little wider however hardly noticeable. Today I tried track spikes in both legs but they would NOT hold the figure securely on a moving loco so a Nano on the figure seems to me to be the best way. Regards Laurie
